By using iknowlingo.com, its apps or its emails, you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the service.
1. What iknowlingo is
iknowlingo is a reference site about the origins and meanings of phrases, slang, idioms and quotations. It is for general information and entertainment. Etymology is often uncertain; we label disputed origins, but we cannot guarantee every entry is complete or correct.
2. Our content and what you may do with it
- Our original writing, design, logo and the iknowlingo name belong to us. You may read, share links to and quote short passages with credit and a link back. Please don’t copy whole pages or republish our content at scale, by hand or by automated means, without written permission.
- Openly licensed material: some definitions and quotations are adapted from Wiktionary and Wikiquote under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license. Those portions are marked and remain available to you under that same license. Public-domain material stays in the public domain.
- Quotations from copyrighted works appear in short excerpts for commentary and reference. Their rights belong to their owners.
3. Acceptable use
Don’t: break the law using the service; scrape or bulk-download content, including to train AI models, without permission; interfere with the site’s security or performance; impersonate anyone; or post content that is unlawful, hateful, harassing or infringes someone else’s rights.
4. Accounts
You must be at least 13 (16 in the EEA and UK) to create an account. Keep your sign-in details private; you are responsible for activity on your account. We may suspend accounts that break these terms.
5. Suggestions and submissions
If you send corrections, phrase suggestions or comments, you let us use, edit and publish them without payment, and you confirm you have the right to share them.
6. Pro subscriptions
- Pro is billed monthly or yearly in advance and renews automatically until you cancel.
- Cancel any time in your account settings; you keep Pro until the end of the period you paid for.
- Free trials convert to paid unless cancelled before the trial ends.
- Refunds: we refund yearly plans cancelled within 14 days; otherwise payments are non-refundable except where the law requires. Purchases in our apps follow Apple’s or Google’s refund rules.
- We will give at least 30 days’ notice of a price change before it applies to you.
7. Ads, affiliate links and other sites
The site shows ads and labeled affiliate links. We are not responsible for other websites, products or services we link to.
8. Disclaimers
The service is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent the law allows. iknowlingo is not legal, academic or professional advice.
9. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, iknowlingo is not liable for indirect or consequential damages, and our total liability for any claim is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the past 12 months or US$50.
10. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Washington, USA. Disputes will be handled in the courts of King County, Washington, unless the law where you live gives you other rights.
11. Changes
We may update these terms. We will post changes here with a new effective date and, for significant changes, email account holders. Continuing to use the service means you accept the updated terms.
